Tears made it hard for Jacob to read the last few words. As he read aloud, he could hear his mother’s voice whispering the words in his ear.

“They went to South America?” Moses stuttered.

“Yes, but we’ll join them,” Jacob said, hugging Moses’s trembling little body.

“But South America . . . It’s so far away. It’s taken us a long time to get around this part of France. Plus, there’s a huge ocean between us. We’ll never make it, Jacob. We’ve lost them forever.”

“No, listen to me.” Jacob took his brother’s face in his hands. “We’ve made it this far. Nothing will stop us. We’ll travel heaven and earth ’til we find them.”

Moses wanted to believe him. But he could not stand the separation any longer. He was lost, lost in the anguish of loneliness, and the hope of seeing his parents again had gone up in smoke.

Jacob gently brushed his tears away, then started singing an old lullaby—one their mother had sung to them when they could not sleep. He listened to his brother’s breathing for a while, his rapidly beating heart, his desperate sighing, but it all eventually slowed and quieted. Silence took over like a hot, burning wind. Jacob turned the light off and stared at the reflection that came in from the window. He tried to encourage himself, to convince himself they could make it. But he could not find the words to dispel his fear.
